Visualisation techniques use the power of your imagination to release tension in the body. You are asked to visualise yourself in a safe and beautiful place. At the turn of the century the pharmacist Emil Coue, recognised that the way we think can have an alarming impact on our health and well being. He found that many of his patients could exacerbate their conditions by focusing on them, and thinking in a negative way made their symptoms worse. Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology, also used this technique with his patients, referring to it as “active imagination”. He encouraged them to draw on the intuitive and imaginative parts of their minds to help manage stressful situations. He expressed the importance of balance and harmony, the need for an appreciation of the unconscious mind, and how this was necessary for good health and a sense of well being. The body learns both good and bad habits. For instance, if we habitually think our glass is half empty, this will make us feel anxious, then the muscles in the body get tight and posture becomes rigid. Fluidity and mobility are blocked, breathing becomes shallow and our emotional response to life events, illness and everyday dilemmas becomes heightened. Feelings of dread, wanting to run away from the situation, and a sense of self defeat and fatigue take over. Allowing your imagination to take you on a journey away from negative thoughts, is a way of re-training the brain to unlearn this negative response to stressful situations. Very often we are unaware that tension is building up in our bodies to such an extent it influences, very often in a negative way, our approach to daily life. It affects the way we think about the future and gets in the way of our realising our hopes and dreams. After a period of time the mind and body will learn a more positive approach, so that reactions to stress are less negative and less damaging to your health. A more relaxed response to stressful situations is less harmful to the body and the mind. |
