Back Care – Video 1
In this first video of the series, Bridgette takes a student who has suffered with non-specific lower back pain over many years and starts him off in the Back Care course. This is a genuine beginner who is in real need of Pilates to improve core stability and fight back at back pain!

We further develop the long pelvic tilt in this second video, start to work our oblique muscles and progess with some really interesting co-ordination exercises. Some Pilates exercises can look easy at times – but it’s so much fun finding out that they take an interesting combination of co-ordination and strength to get them just right. Enjoy!

In this video we make the side lying clam more challenging, introduce the adductor lift to really engage the muscles of the inner thighs plus the core and go on to find out how to do the Cat properly. The session continues with hip rolls; starting to focus attention more on using our hips together with our core.

Today we’re looking at developing the hip rolls exercise some more and introducing a very simple piece of equipment that is so effective. Best of all it costs very little and can be integrated into several exercises. We also have a reminder about the body check and bring in a lot more upper body function and co-ordination, whilst looking deeper into tension issues.

You should be starting to become familiar and comfortable with the matwork we’ve covered so far. So – Bridgette takes us on to a level that those who have had back pain will appreciate is more of a challenge. Watch the video all the way through. Make sure you’re comfortable with what we’ve been practicing and only progress at your own pace. This progression is not wild but a great little push forward in the development of those vital core muscles that will stabilise and protect your spine.

The next video takes us into the front leg kick and further front lying activities. We als get into some interesting development of scapula depressions and also become more sophisticated with our two legs up off the mat. To finish, those oblique muscles are going to get a superb little work out in this powerful development of side rolls. You’ll love it once you’ve practiced a few times. Remember – to connect with your core muscles fully. They must do all the work! By this stage in your pilates course you’ll be feeling fantastic after your practice and you’ll possibly start to see your torso look in better shape too.

The exercise band comes in handy early in this progression as we use it during the leg slide. We also get further into side lying work and move into side bends to carefully develop the mobility and strength of our muscle groups in a less used plane of motion. There’s also further work on the upper body and our hips are not forgotten either. Plus, we start to get a little more challenging with by intoducing toe taps. Don’t worry – it’s all very gradual and carefully illustrated by your coach. We also get great stretching training to finish.

Now we’re moving on with some standing movements including shoulder shrugs and scapula press followed by rolling down the right way onto the mat. We work with the single leg stretch, the front leg kick and experience the benefits of a deep gluteal stretch.

We’ve gone for a complete change today. Meet Jackie. She’s going to run through a great little series of movements that make excellent use of what we’ve been working on for the last few weeks. Under Bridgette’s instruction, join with Jackie as the side lying exercises are taken on to the next level.

Back Care – Video 10
Do you remember a few weeks back that I said some pilates moves can look easy – but are actually quite fun to get right?! There’s one simple exercise in this progression that will get many of you laughing. But it’s really good too! On the serious side, we do cover quite a lot of ground in this development with some fantastic oblique work plus loads more. We also start you with the ‘V’ stretch, which is much easier than it looks.

Back Care Pilates – Video 11
This week Bridgette has us putting together a fluid routine. Starting from standing and carefully getting down to the mat the way we’ve been practicing, following through a great sequence that challenges many parts of our body together with careful co-ordination. Then releasing our lower back with tail circles and then moving on wto our ‘V’ stretch and carefully roling back up to standing. We roll down carefully from standing now and get into an ‘all fours’ co-ordination challenge this week. In addition we work with the side bridge and thread the needle exercises for some wonderful oblique activity, building our strength and agility to help support and protect our spine. A wonderful prayer stretch ends this fabulous routine.

Everyone has their own pace, but by this time most will be feeling reasonably confident in the movements we have been practicing. So from here on, we will follow a couple more students (Mark and Helen) as they demonstrate routines designed for them by Bridgette. This is a nice short session to get us up on our knees, improving our mobility and building flexibility with the side reach and circle, rotation and the cat, followed by a shell stretch to sooth and relax the back muscles.

We have a little more of a challenge now with the nest session. It’s not a long routine, but doing the movements with care and precision as always, will test your past practice. If you feel confident, repeat the routine again when you have mastered it. The exercises in this video include the long pelvic tilt (sometimes called the ‘large’ pelvic tilt), curl ups with the added challenge of both legs in the chair position, side lying clam with pulses to work those muscles, swimming arms and legs followed by a shell stretch to finish.

In this routine, we follow Mark as he practices working with his hips, doing hip circles and the hip flexor stretch with a more challenging method of working the adductor muscles in the inner thighs. This routine progresses into some more kneeling side bends to continue our development in this area and we end with a nice deep gluteal stretch, where we can sit quietly for a minute each side feeling that firm but gentle stretch of our glutes.
