Mini eCourse – Exercise 15

Side Reach

While we are standing lets practice some Side Reaches and to help control the exercise, try it initially with your back resting against a wall. This exercise works the spine in a side to side direction. It is therefore a ‘lateral flexion’ exercise that will also help tone your waist. (For clarity we have not pictured the exercise against a wall. When you have achieved good form in this exercise, the wall is not needed as a guide.)

So, start by standing with your back against a wall, feet a little wider than hip distance apart and hands down by your sides.

Your shoulder blades and bottom will be touching the wall, but your heels should be just a little bit away. Your posture should be good and so your back will be long and your head and neck drawn so you are as tall as you can be. The back of your head should not touch the wall.

Breathe in and on the out breath engage the deep abdominal muscles. Raise your right arm in a sweeping action up above your head. Try and brush the arm against the wall or as close to it as you comfortably can. Do not force the arm back to the wall.

Ensure your shoulder stays down by monitoring the scapula which should stay down your back.

Take a breath in and then on the out breath reach your right arm further over to your right above your head. Visualize the stretch as being from the waist and not really driven by the arm. Your back will remain against the wall and your hips, legs and feet are not to move. Allow your head to tip over as your upper body stretches over to your left.

Gently return to the upright position as you take a breath in.

Breathe out as you sweep your right arm down the wall to your side.

Carry out 5 repetitions to the right side, followed by 5 repetitions to your left side.

When you have fully mastered maintaining the precise front to rear alignment, you will be better placed to execute the side reach exercises without the guidance of a wall behind you (as the photo sequence above).

Is Pilates easy exercise?

Well – yes and no. Pilates is about careful, slow, gentle movement and not the massive, rapid, demanding actions found in some sports or other exercise disciplines. But whilst it is a gentle form of exercise, the precision and control of body movement required is quite high. This takes careful practise and the development of good muscular strength, control and co-ordination to be able to master the movements. Thankfully, the exercise modules we have designed are very carefully structured to lead you on a journey of physical development. It cannot be emphasized enough that the modules must be followed exactly as presented and practised to steadily build up your abilities.
