Mini eCourse – Exercise 8

Knee Folds

This exercise is a little more of a challenge for your muscles to be able to keep your pelvis and lower back in neutral alignment and stable. Throughout this exercise, it is important to maintain the pelvis in the neutral position, the pelvic floor engaged and the stomach muscles drawn in. Rest your hands flat on your lower abdomen (below your navel) to feel the muscles engage and remain in operation.

Take professional medical advice before attempting this exercise or the Starfish to follow if you suffer with lower back pain or sciatica.

Start in the Relaxation position.

Breathe in through the nose wide and deep into the back of the ribcage.

Breathe out through the mouth, engaging the pelvic floor muscles and drawing the stomach muscles in toward the spine. As you do so, fold the left knee up toward you, maintaining a 90 degree angle between the upper and lower leg and the toes pointed away.

Breathe in at the top.

Breathe out as you slowly return the left foot to the floor.

Repeat this again 4 to 6 times for the left leg and then five times with the right leg.

The action of drawing the leg up should feel that it comes from the hip calling the leg back and into the hip joint. The left leg with the foot on the floor should not be pressed down hard to lever the right leg up. The left foot must rest gently on the floor. This does not come easily and will take practice. Only when this feeling of gentle balance is achieved will you get an idea that the correct muscle groups are operating to control the movement. Most importantly, this movement should not stress the lower back. If it does, you are not forming the connection with the deep abdominal muscles and you need to practice some more the process of centring before continuing.

This takes careful practise and the development of good muscular strength, control and co-ordination to be able to master the movements. Thankfully, the exercise modules we have designed are very carefully structured to lead you on a journey of physical development. It cannot be emphasized enough that the modules must be followed exactly as presented and practised to steadily build up your abilities.
